Goodbye Windows Azure – Say Hello to Microsoft Azure

Microsoft announced on Tuesday this week that Windows Azure, the company’s cloud platform, will be renamed Microsoft Azure. According to the company, this change reflects “Microsoft’s strategy and focus on Azure as the public cloud platform for customers as well as [their] own services.” We clearly see two trends for Microsoft: the recent renaming of products and a shift toward the Cloud, far beyond Windows. In the last few months, Microsoft renamed SkyDrive to OneDrive and Office Web Apps to Office Online. While the OneDrive change actually has legal reasons, Microsoft Azure reflects the same focus on simplicity that we saw with the Office Online name change. While there’s no indication that Microsoft is moving away from Windows, the name change does put the focus on Azure’s ability to work well outside of any OS. As Microsoft’s blog announcing the change said Azure works on a broad set of  “operating systems, languages, and services… from Windows, SQL and .NET to Python, Ruby, Node.js, Java, Hadoop, Linux and Oracle.” But it absolutely fits to the availability of Microsoft Office for iPad these days.
